Breast Implant Options: Palo Alto

Technology for breast augmentation has advanced significantly in recent years. Women now have a variety of options for breast enhancement with implants. Dr. Vistnes of Vistnes Plastic Surgery of Palo Alto performs Bay Area breast implant procedures with artistry and surgical excellence, custom-tailored to each individual patient’s needs.

Which Type of Breast Implant to Choose: Saline, Silicone, or Gummy Bear?

The procedure typically requires several hours to complete. The patient is under general anesthetic during surgery. After it is complete, you will recover for a short period and then can return to your home to rest and recover. You will need a driver to get home, and will have a surgical bra to hold the healing tissues and implants in place. You will be provided with complete aftercare instructions and will have follow-up appointments to ensure your recovery is proceeding as it should.

Saline Breast Implants

These implants are composed of a silicone shell filled with sterile saline solution (salt water). Advantages of saline implants include:

  • Sterile salt water can be easily absorbed and naturally expelled by the body in case of implant rupture.
  • In the event of leak, saline implants collapse, so there is no need for regular screening (MRI or ultrasound) to detect silent rupture.
  • Saline implants require shorter incisions, as they can be filled with saline solution after they are placed in the body.
  • Typically, saline implants cost less than other types of implants.

The disadvantages of saline breast implants are chiefly cosmetic. Particularly in women with modest breast tissue, they may look and feel less like natural breast tissue than is achieved with silicone implants.

Silicone Breast Implants

Many women choose silicone implants (silicone shell filled with silicone gel) for their cosmetic advantages. They look and feel more like natural breasts and have a lower rate of rippling than saline implants. However, silicone implants also have some disadvantages.

  • They are prefilled by the manufacturer and require a larger incision for placement.
  • If a leak or rupture develops, the implant will not collapse. Women with silicone implants require regular ultrasound or MRI screening to detect silent rupture.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants

Form stable silicone gel-filled implants are called gummy bear implants because of their thicker texture of the gel. These implants maintain their shape even if the implant shell is broken.

Gummy bear implants are shaped more like a natural breast – more projection at the bottom and tapered towards the top. They are less prone to rippling and wrinkling than other types of implants. However, they also feel stiffer than saline or silicone implants and require a slightly longer incision.

Structured Saline Implants

This recently introduced option aims to combine the advantages of silicone and saline implants. The implants are designed with chambers inside the silicone shell to hold the saline solution, reducing movement and creating a feel more like silicone implants. Advantages of this breast implant option include:

  • Softer, more natural feel than saline implants, similar to the feel of silicone implants
  • No silent rupture screening necessary, as a deflated implant becomes evident immediately and the body can safely absorb sterile saline

Structured saline implants are more costly than standard saline implants. They are not quite as soft as silicone implants, although the difference would only be evident in women with very little breast tissue.
