The "tumescent technique" (also called the super-wet technique) was developed nearly two decades ago by dermatologists and allowed the removal of significant amounts of fat during the operation with much less blood loss. With this technique, the fat layer is injected with large amounts of saline and adrenalin solution before suctioning. While effective at fat removal, patients would unfortunately describe the experience afterwards like feeling like they’d been “hit by a truck.”
Ultrasonic liposuction, also known as ultrasound assisted lipoplasty
(UAL), is a technical advancement over older liposuction techniques. Introduced
into the USA in 1994, and FDA approved in 1996, it is rapidly becoming
the preferred technique for fat removal and body sculpting among plastic
surgeons. UAL seems to allow more fat removal with less blood loss,
bleeding and bruising. Recovery can be significantly shorter with significantly
less discomfort than with other approaches.
