CHIN IMPLANTS (CHIN AUGMENTATION)

A Chin Augmentation can increase the projection, and strengthen the appearance of, the chin. At the same time, the procedure can create better harmony between the different areas of the face and create a more attractive profile. Very often, only subtle changes in size of the chin will create dramatic improvements in the way you look. This operation is relatively simple and straight-forward and uses solid, soft, and specially designed implants.

What to expect:

A chin implant is performed by making an incision either in the crease under the chin, or inside the mouth near the bottom of the lower lip. Both incisions tend to heal very well, with no conspicuous scarring: The mouth incision leaves no trace of a scar on the outside. During the operation, a small pocket is created right on top of the jawbone in the chin area, and the implant is placed in the pocket. Dissolving stitches are sewn inside the mouth if this incision is used, or tiny removable stitches are used if an outer skin incision is selected. Tape is placed on the outside on the skin for several days to minimize swelling and hold the implant steady. Most swelling resolves by 10-14 days. This operation is typically done under local anesthesia with sedation (patient awake), and usually takes less than an hour to perform. Some patients may prefer being asleep, especially if other procedures are being performed at the same time. Surgery is done as an out-patient procedure, meaning you come in and go home the same day. There may be some mild black and blue discoloration, swelling, and some temporary change in sensation of the skin after the operation. This tends to resolve within the first 10-14 days.

Complications:

Complications after a chin implant are rare but possible as with any operation. The potential problems include bleeding, infection, scarring, changes in the sensation, and, rarely, nerve injury. Movement or bad positioning of the implant is also possible but unusual. Ask your plastic surgeon if you are a good candidate for these operations, and see what improvements are possible with this relatively simple and straight-forward procedure.
