BREAST ENLARGEMENT (AUGMENTATION)

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that is typically used to enlarge small or underdeveloped breasts, or breasts that have lost their size or fullness following childbirth. It is accomplished by placing an implant behind each breast.

What Is It?

The implants used today for cosmetic breast augmentation come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and surface textures. Saline (sterile salt water) implants are used for the vast majority of cosmetic breast augmentation procedures in the United States. Silicone gel implants are usually reserved for women having breast reconstruction after cancer, or women having secondary or unusual breast enlargement surgery. The doctors do use silicone gel implants for women meeting the FDA guideline requirements if they desire them.
